Exiled in his youth for permitting himself to be seduced by Princess Lyra Kess. He refused to leave her side and, because his father was the king's trusted general, instead of execution he was exiled. He traveled to Avandell and later to Ulmeth, where he joined the Crow Fodder Brotherhood.

When the king died Haran Stonehand became Regent Protector, much to the dismay of the Anvil Assembly. Lyra's allies, fearful of a potential coup, stole her away to Kel-Thekel. This began the Kessan Exile. At Kel-Thekel, Lyra reunited with Signas and they rekindled their romance. Meanwhile, Haran Stonehand began purging the Anvil Assembly of Kessan loyalists.

Signas, feigning a desire to be restored to Haran's side, appealed to his father. Haran consented and welcomed his son back to Kel Kozaad. Once there Signas regained Haran's trust and, after a year of planning, led a coup to restore Lyra. Once she took the throne Lyra planned to exile Haran, but Signas convinced her that she would never be safe as long as Haran lived. She reluctantly condemned him to death and Signas carried out the execution.

The stain of dishonor upon Signas, who was an exile, an oath-breaker and a kin-slayer, compelled him to leave the company of Queen Lyra lest she be defamed by association. Signas reluctantly returned to his mercenary brotherhood and left Byrth a second time. He returned during the War of the Blank Shields, where he reluctantly followed his commander, Graham Grey-Eye, into battle against his former companions at the Battle of Stone Fist Bridge.

Signas was elected commander of the Crow Cloaks during their flight from Dellforth, and led them back into Eaton, where he dissolved the company contract and took whoever would join him back to Ulmeth. He adventured in Althion and Ulmeth for several years before his service was up and thereafter returned to Kel Kozaad, where he renounced his claim to his family's fortune in return for admittance into the city. Queen Lyra assigned him as a lesser attendant among her servants, and it was rumored that she took him again as her lover.

Signas was killed in the Conflagration of Kozaad.
